What is mold testing?

Mold testing involves collecting air or surface samples from a building and sending them to a laboratory for analysis. The lab identifies the types and concentrations of mold spores present, helping you determine whether indoor mold levels are elevated or abnormal compared to outdoor baseline samples. Every ImmunoLytics lab analysis includes a free consultation with a certified Indoor Environmental Professional (IEP). During the consultation, your IEP will walk you through your analytical report, answer your questions, and offer personalized suggestions to improve your indoor air quality.

How do I use an ImmunoLytics mold test kit?

ImmunoLytics kits support three sample types depending on what you need to test:

Air samples (gravity settle plates or tap tests): Place the open petri dish in areas of concern for the specified exposure time to capture airborne spores as they settle. For a tap test, take the dish in the palm of your hand with fingers extended and gently tap to dislodge settled spores. Seal and return to our lab.

Swab samples (surface testing): Use the included swab to collect material from a visible mold stain or suspected surface. Seal the swab and return it to our lab for genus-level identification.

Dust History samples (settled dust): Collect settled dust from a horizontal surface—such as a shelf, vent cover, or window sill—using the included collection device. Accumulated dust reveals the mold genera present in your environment over time. See our Dust History testing page for details.

How do I read my mold test results?

When do I need professional testing instead of a DIY mold test kit?

DIY mold test kits are ideal for initial screening and post-remediation verification in residential settings. For large commercial properties, significant visible mold growth, or legally defensible documentation, we recommend consulting with a certified indoor environmental professional (IEP) for a full assessment.
